September got real AF New Noizers. My PMA is still high but the industry gut punched me back into reality. Cryptic updates will continue because in radio, egos are delicate, and I know my way around one (or twenty).
This past Friday was an avalanche of new releases: legends like Neko Case and Jeff Tweedy dropped heavy hitters, while John Maus blessed us with gothy goodness on "Later Than You Think". Even Polyvinyl, not exactly known for hip-hop releases, came out with Plato III, which isn’t a straight hip-hop record, but then again, what even is hip-hop? I’m not touching that debate, but I will say "Grown" is worth your time.
Stones Throw got hyper indie with Automatic’s "Is It Now?", while Doja Cat time-traveled into the 80s on Vie (and she’s rapping more than ever). Meanwhile, Purity Ring’s new self-titled LP apparently pulls inspiration from Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, which is basically a cheat code for my ears. And if you’re craving that ‘90s alt-garage vibe, Geese came correct with a flannel ready record.
But the crown this week goes to Moon Panda’s "Dumb Luck". I’ve been waiting all year for this one, and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s a record you immediately restart the second it ends. Subtle lo-fi joy woven through hip swaying grooves. Not boring, not background just pure vibes.
New Noise song of the week? Easy: aron!“deja vu”. Maybe it’s the overcast SB skies, maybe it’s job-app rejection emails piling up, maybe it’s Yankees playoff stress, but this song hits.
And speaking of hits, shout out to Darren Korb and the Hades II OST. When the first Hades dropped in 2020, it ate my life. My most played Switch game outside of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. With Hades II, Darren and his crew came through again with 52 tracks that don’t just soundtrack the Underworld, they transport you there. The deluxe edition even bundles the OST, worth it.
No wild concert story this week (I know, shocking). But that drought ends tonight with Mac DeMarco at the SBBowl. Moving forward hopefully the concert gods will grant me there favor under the October moonlight.
